Internships - Personal Statement

What will I need to include in my personal statement? Your personal statement should address and answer each of the following questions and should not exceed 3 paragraphs:

  • Please describe a personal experience that prompted your interest in your chosen fields.
  • What attracts you to this potential career path?
  • Why do you want to do an internship this summer?

Why do I need to write a personal statement? Remember that this is just like applying for employment. You need to convince the admissions committee and mentor that you are passionate about this opportunity and are the best candidate for the internship.

What else do I need to know about the personal statement? After you're done, let someone else read it and help you with edits. Make sure your final draft doesn't have any visible edits in it and then save it as a PDF before you upload it to your online account. Please try to remember that the committee has lots of applications to read and we wouldn't want you to jeopardize your chances because of mistakes in spelling and grammar that could have been avoided through careful proofreading!
